Zimbabwe

With some of Africa’s finest guides, the thundering torrent of Victoria Falls, and unspoiled wilderness areas alive with the dramas of predators and prey, Zimbabwe has emerged as a first-class safari destination.

Hwange National Park is the country’s flagship safari destination, home to more than 100 mammal species, including big cats, elephant, buffalo and antelope. Wildlife in Mana Pools National Park thrives thanks to the broad Zambezi River, the four oxbow lakes it has created and its verdant floodplain, where wild dog prowl. Then there’s Lake Kariba, where sunset boat trips get you close to hippo, crocodiles and African fish eagles.

The best time to visit Zimbabwe is between July and October, when game viewing is at its peak. The natural waterholes in the parks dry up and huge herds congregate at the lakes, man-made waterholes and rivers.

However, travel from November through to March rewards those wanting to get off the beaten track and explore the country’s rich cultural history. Birders, in particular, will be delighted by the presence of migratory birds.

Meanwhile, April to June provides great value, and fantastic views of Victoria Falls in full flow can be enjoyed.

Temperatures remain warm throughout the year, ranging from 21°C to 35°C.
